Tour summary
This cycling journey is deeply rooted in Mongolia’s history and landscapes, focusing on the heart of central Mongolia and its most important cultural corridors. The route follows the legendary Orkhon Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its sweeping grasslands, river systems, and centuries of nomadic civilization. Scattered across the valley are ancient monuments, stone inscriptions, and sacred ruins that trace the rise and fall of Mongolia’s great empires.
Along the way, you’ll explore key archaeological sites including Khar Khul Khaany Balgas in Erdenemandal, the ruins of Ordu-Baliq (Khar Balgas), once the capital of the Uyghur Empire, the Jargalantyn Am Deer stone complex, and the Tsookhor Tolgoi burial site. These places reveal layers of Turkic, Uyghur, and Mongol history rarely visited by travelers.
The journey begins in Ulaanbaatar and continues by train to Erdenet, Mongolia’s second-largest city, where the cycling adventure truly starts. From Erdenet, you ride south through rolling hills, forested slopes, wide river valleys, and open steppe toward Kharkhorin. As the days unfold, city life fades into quiet countryside, with herds of livestock, nomadic families, and vast horizons setting the pace.
Midway through the route, a restorative stop at Tsenkher Hot Springs offers a chance to soak in mineral-rich waters surrounded by forested hills—an ideal pause after several days of riding.
The tour culminates in Kharkhorin (Karakorum), the former capital of the Mongol Empire founded by Chinggis Khaan. Here, you’ll visit Erdene Zuu Monastery, Mongolia’s oldest Buddhist monastery, built directly on the ruins of the ancient capital and still standing as a symbol of Mongolia’s spiritual and imperial past.
Throughout the journey, support vehicles travel alongside the group, providing flexibility and comfort. Evenings are spent camping under wide starry skies or staying in traditional ger camps, sharing meals and experiencing the genuine hospitality of rural Mongolia.
