Tour summary
This journey offers a rare opportunity to live alongside a real Mongolian nomadic family, experiencing a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries. Spend 2 to 7 days in a traditional ger (yurt), with private space and support from local nomads who visit daily to prepare meals, light the fire, and help you settle into life on the steppe.
We’ll tailor your experience based on your interests and schedule. Once we receive your travel preferences, we’ll share detailed information and photos of available families so you can choose your hosts. Our partner families live in four different regions, including:
• Selenge or Uvurkhangai (Central region)
• Khuvsgul (Northern region)
• Khovd or Bayan-Ulgii (Western region)
• Umnu-Govi or Dund-Govi (Southern region)
If your chosen family lives in northern, southern, or western Mongolia, we’ll arrange a local flight, as road travel can take up to 2–4 days.
Each day begins with the sounds of animals and the smell of fresh milk tea. We encourage you to fully participate in daily nomadic life: cook traditional meals, milk yaks or cows, gather firewood, or simply sit under the endless sky and enjoy quiet moments of peace. No experience is needed; your host family and guide will teach and assist you every step of the way.
About the Host Families
We work with six different nomadic families in various regions. Each family lives the same traditional lifestyle, though their surroundings and landscapes vary. Once you choose your preferred region and distance from Ulaanbaatar, we’ll send detailed family information by email so you can select your host.
Here’s an example of one of our partner families, along with a photo of them together with some of our past guests, followed by a day-by-day itinerary to help you imagine what your experience will be like:
Munkhuu and Naraa live with their three children about 5 km from Kharkhorin, the ancient Mongol capital. Their summer camp lies between the Orkhon River and nearby forested mountains. They herd sheep, goats, cows, and horses, and during summer their children come home from school to help with daily herding life, just as nomadic families have done for generations.
Guests stay in a traditional ger, comfortably furnished with the essentials. Meals can be cooked or prepared by the family, using fresh local ingredients. When nights turn cool, the stove in the middle of the ger provides warmth and comfort. Facilities are simple, an outdoor squatting toilet, and washing options include the nearby town or a refreshing swim in the Orkhon River.
You can spend your days riding horses, hiking in the valleys, helping with herding, or learning to make dairy products, or simply relaxing in the stillness of nature.
